ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India has announced a major breakthrough in offshore steel manufacturing after becoming the first steelmaker in the world to produce welded pipes meeting the API 5L X100 standard for offshore applications.
The high strength welded pipes have been manufactured at the company’s Hazira facility in Gujarat using Submerged Arc Welding technology. According to AM/NS India, the pipes have also received certification from the American Bureau of Shipping, confirming compliance with international offshore engineering requirements, including strength, structural integrity and suitability for demanding marine environments.
This development is significant because high strength welded pipes for critical offshore applications are currently imported from Europe. By producing API 5L X100 pipes locally, AM/NS India is strengthening domestic capability in specialised steel manufacturing and reducing dependence on imported materials for strategic offshore infrastructure.

The pipes are manufactured from EQ70 grade steel, a high strength low alloy steel with a minimum yield strength of 690 MPa. This grade is designed for severe offshore service, including deepwater pipelines, offshore oil and gas platforms, jack up rig leg bracing and offshore wind structures.
AM/NS India confirmed that it has already supplied the welded pipes to a leading domestic oil and gas producer.
The company said the achievement supports India’s Atmanirbhar Bharat initiative by expanding indigenous manufacturing capability in advanced steel products required for critical energy and offshore projects.
For the offshore sector, pipe strength, weld integrity and certification are not optional. They determine whether a product can survive high pressure, aggressive marine conditions and demanding structural loads.
The successful production of API 5L X100 welded pipes shows that advanced offshore grade pipe manufacturing is no longer limited to established European suppliers. It also demonstrates the growing role of Indian steelmakers in supplying technically demanding products for oil and gas, deepwater pipeline and offshore wind applications.
For welding and fabrication professionals, the key point is clear: as higher strength steels enter offshore construction, welding procedure qualification, heat input control, toughness validation and inspection requirements will become even more critical. API 5L X100 pipe production is not just a steelmaking milestone. It is also a welding engineering achievement.
