Fronius International has introduced the Velocity Assistant, an innovative support system developed to significantly enhance manual MIG/MAG welding performance, particularly for long and demanding weld seams. The system directly addresses three persistent challenges in manual welding: maintaining constant travel speed, achieving stable torch guidance, and controlling heat input over extended weld lengths.
The Velocity Assistant is based on a secondary solid wire, known as the Velo wire, which operates without an arc and without shielding gas. The wire makes direct contact with the workpiece and generates controlled forward motion through friction. Welding travel speed is therefore defined mechanically by the Velo wire feed rate rather than by operator hand movement.
By gently pushing the welding torch along the joint line, groove, or chamfer, the system maintains a constant contact tip to work distance and stabilises torch movement. The additional material contribution from the Velo wire is minimal, with consumption directly proportional to weld length. No special joint preparation or seam modification is required.
The Velocity Assistant is intended for manual MIG/MAG welding applications where long, straight, or continuous weld seams are required and where operator fatigue or travel speed variation can negatively affect weld quality. The system is compatible with Fronius welding processes including Standard, LSC, Pulse, PMC, and CMT, and is suitable for both thin and thick section welding.
The Velocity Assistant delivers measurable improvements in weld quality, productivity, and operator ergonomics:
The Velocity Assistant is reported to be suited to industrial sectors where long, precise, and repeatable weld seams are common:

The system can be retrofitted to existing Fronius TPS i systems from 320 A and iWave Multiprocess PRO platforms. Required components include the Velo wire feeder, a torch adapter with integrated wire guidance, and software activation.
The Velo holder offers full 360 degree rotation and can be quickly disengaged in restricted access conditions. Activation is controlled directly from the welding torch, allowing seamless switching between assisted and conventional manual welding.
The Velocity Assistant also presents potential value as an enabling tool for cold wire gas metal arc welding applications, where independent control of wire addition and heat input is beneficial.
The Fronius Velocity Assistant establishes a new performance benchmark for manual MIG/MAG welding by combining controlled travel speed, improved ergonomics, and repeatable weld quality. For fabrication environments seeking to bridge the gap between manual and automated welding without sacrificing flexibility, the system represents a technically robust and production ready solution.
