... Sharing knowledge to empower

Ghana has marked a major step in technical and vocational education with the commissioning of the Design and Technology Institute (DTI) Welder Training and Testing Centre, Africa’s first American Welding Society (AWS) SENSE participating school.
The facility, located on DTI’s campus, includes a forty booth workshop, digital welding simulators, and a metallurgical testing laboratory being developed toward ISO IEC 17025 standards. It was built to AWS SENSE specifications to advance global certification and industrial competitiveness.
DTI Founder and President, Ms. Constance Elizabeth Swaniker, described the centre as a catalyst for transformation, stating that it would bridge the skills gap, raise employability, and strengthen Ghana’s human capital base. She noted that DTI’s seventy percent employability rate, validated by IFC Vitae, reflected its commitment to industry aligned training and entrepreneurship development.
Dr. Archibald Buah Kwofie of the Ghana Atomic Energy Commission described the facility as a strategic national asset and urged collaboration to harmonise welding standards across the country, emphasising its role in supporting Ghana’s emerging nuclear energy programme.
Observers highlighted that the centre would align skills with industry demand, raise global competitiveness through AWS and ISO certification, and empower youth through simulation based and practical training.

Head of Welding and Fabrication, Mr. Isaac Tetteh, said the centre would produce welders trained to AWS, ASME, and ISO standards while reducing reliance on foreign expertise.
The DTI Welder Training and Testing Centre was widely regarded as a strategic investment in Ghana’s industrial future and a symbol of its commitment to skills, standards, and innovation, lighting the path for a new generation of skilled African welders.
